How to Dispose of Your Old Mattress.

June 17, 2019

Do you take away the old bed? This is a question I’m often asked. Sometimes, people put off replacing their bed because they don’t know what to do with the old one. Yes, is the answer; we'll take your old bed for recycling.

In Croydon borough, there are community recycling and refuse locations (as provided by local authorities nationwide) where you can take an old bed, but it’s not easy to transport an old bed because it doesn’t fit into a family saloon car. If you turn up at the refuse location in a van, they qualify you as ‘commercial’ and require you to provide a waste carriers licence, and pay. Some people don’t have any means of transporting their old bed for refuse.

At the main recycling centre in Factory Lane, Croydon which accepts trade waste, the fee to dispose of a mattress is around £20 plus VAT.  If we turn up with a van full the fee is multiplied by the number of mattresses on-board. It may be argued that this fee is too high, thus encouraging fly tipping.

Surrey Beds have a waste carriers licence, and can take away your old bed when we deliver your new one. We take the old beds and mattresses to a recycling centre in South East London where they strip down the mattresses and send the waste for recycling. The metal is melted down and re-formed for other uses, the textile is burned and the foam shredded and offered to the turf or insulation industries. Nothing goes to landfill.

If you are worried about what to do with your old bed when your new one arrives, seek out a bed shop where they offer an ‘old bed disposal’ service and buy your new bed there.
